Our February session of Understanding Ableism will explore what it means to create art as a person with a disability in a wide-ranging field that often overlooks access. Artists with disabilities have long challenged stereotypes, reshaped narratives, and broadened cultural imaginations. Yet barriers still remain in forms of limited visibility, typecasting, inaccessible venues, and systems that prioritize certain bodies and voices over others.
Art is a way of telling the truth but can also require persistence and creativity when traditional tools, spaces, and systems are not designed with disabled artists in mind. It is a method of imagining futures and representing lived experiences. Our panelists will reflect on how disability shows up in their work, how audiences engage with it, and how the arts sector can create space not only for inclusion but for leadership, authorship, and authentic storytelling.
